Pornography Exposure Among Malawi Youth Sparks Alarm as Experts Warn of Mental Health and Moral Crisis

By Suleman Chitera

Growing exposure to pornography among young people in Malawi has become a major concern, with experts warning that the trend is contributing to mental health problems, unhealthy relationships and the erosion of cultural and moral values.

The Malawi Censorship Board and a sexual and reproductive health specialist say urgent action is needed to protect young people from harmful online content as access to smartphones and the internet continues to increase across the country.

Speaking on the issue, the Board’s Cultural Standards Officer, Edward Longwe, said pornography promotes behaviour that conflicts with Malawi’s long-standing cultural values of modesty, respect and self-discipline.Tanzania Shuts Down Platform X Amid Pornography Allegations and Rising Political Tensions

According to Longwe, exposure to explicit content encourages early sexual experimentation without a proper understanding of consent, responsibility and the possible long-term consequences.

“It weakens self-discipline, as some young people become more focused on instant gratification than on education, faith and community responsibilities,” he said.

Longwe stressed that tackling the growing challenge requires a united effort involving parents, schools, churches, community leaders and technology companies.

He said schools should strengthen digital literacy programmes alongside moral education to help learners identify and avoid harmful online material. Churches and faith-based organisations, he added, should continue promoting spiritual and cultural values that encourage responsible behaviour.

Longwe also urged technology companies and social media platforms to improve age-verification systems, strengthen content filtering and make it easier for users to report explicit material.Married Men Please Read This!

He further encouraged the promotion of educational and culturally appropriate digital content while calling on young people to participate in sports, arts, cultural activities and community service as positive alternatives that build discipline, creativity and responsibility.

Meanwhile, sexual and reproductive health expert Zaziwe Gunda warned that pornography addiction is becoming an emerging mental health concern among young people in Malawi.

Gunda said excessive consumption of pornography can lead to compulsive behaviour, sexual dysfunction, emotional distress and damaged personal relationships.

He noted that early exposure often creates unrealistic expectations about sex, intimacy and the human body, making it difficult for young people to develop healthy and respectful relationships later in life.

“Pornography presents distorted images of the human body and sexual performance, which influence young people’s understanding of healthy relationships and contribute to psychological distress,” Gunda explained.

He called for early intervention through counselling, psychiatric care and rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with pornography addiction.Government Champions Youth-Led Development Ahead of 2026–2027 National Budget

Both experts agreed that protecting Malawi’s youth from harmful online content requires coordinated action by families, educators, healthcare professionals, religious institutions, communities and digital platforms.
