South Africa has launched a mandatory online travel declaration system requiring all travellers entering or leaving the country to declare the goods and cash they are carrying before travelling.
According to the South African Department of Home Affairs, the new digital system is aimed at improving border management, strengthening customs procedures, and making the movement of travellers more efficient.
Under the new regulations, travellers must complete an online declaration at least 24 hours before their scheduled departure. The declaration includes details of goods, valuables, and cash being carried into or out of South Africa.Hundreds of Undocumented Malawians Face Deportation as Buses Arrive at Beitbridge Border Post
Authorities say the online process is expected to speed up border clearance while helping officials monitor the movement of goods and prevent illegal activities such as smuggling and money laundering.
The Department of Home Affairs clarified that passengers who are only transiting through South Africa on international connecting flights will not be required to complete the online declaration.
Malawians planning to travel to or from South Africa have been advised to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and submit their declarations within the required timeframe to avoid delays, penalties, or disruptions at border posts and airports.Malawi Repatriation Crisis Deepens as Thousands Await Return from South Africa
