President Peter Mutharika Urges US to Increase Investment in Malawi’s Agriculture, Mining, Health and Education

President Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed the strong diplomatic ties between Malawi and the United States, describing the long-standing partnership as mutually beneficial and essential for the country’s economic growth and sustainable development.

Speaking on Friday during a farewell meeting with outgoing United States Chargé d’Affaires Jonathan Fischer at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Mutharika praised the cordial relations that have existed between the two nations over the years.

The President appealed to the United States Government to continue supporting Malawi’s development efforts while expanding investment in strategic sectors that have the potential to transform the country’s economy.

He specifically highlighted agriculture, mining, education and health as priority areas where increased American investment could create jobs, strengthen public services, boost productivity and improve the lives of millions of Malawians.

According to Mutharika, stronger cooperation between Malawi and the United States will play a significant role in advancing the country’s development agenda and attracting more international investment.

“The relationship between Malawi and the United States has remained strong and productive. Continued cooperation and increased investment will help drive Malawi’s economic development and improve opportunities for our people,” the President said.

Outgoing US Chargé d’Affaires Jonathan Fischer expressed gratitude to the Government and the people of Malawi for the warm hospitality extended to him throughout his diplomatic assignment.

Fischer reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to maintaining its partnership with Malawi through development programmes, humanitarian assistance and initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods across the country.

He said the United States values its relationship with Malawi and remains committed to supporting projects that promote economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions, improve healthcare and expand access to quality education.

The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between Malawi and the United States, with both sides expressing optimism about deepening cooperation in areas that will contribute to national development and shared prosperity.

The United States has for many years been one of Malawi’s key development partners, supporting programmes in public health, agriculture, food security, education, governance and humanitarian response.

As Malawi seeks to accelerate economic growth and attract foreign direct investment, the government’s call for increased US investment is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation and create new opportunities for development.
