LILONGWE, Malawi – Minister of Lands Chimwemwe Chipungu has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, demanding a public apology and retraction over allegations concerning his personal wealth or face legal action.

The legal threat follows a recent press conference in which Namiwa called on the minister to explain the source of funds allegedly used to construct the Backyard Hotel and purchase seven Nissan vehicles.PIJ investigation reveals identities of Namiwa attackers

In a demand letter delivered through his legal representatives, Mchizi and Associates, Chipungu argues that the claims are false, defamatory and have damaged his reputation. The letter requires Namiwa to withdraw the allegations and issue a public apology within 48 hours of receiving it.

Lawyer Khwima Mchizi confirmed that the demand letter had been served.

According to the letter, Chipungu disputes claims that he purchased seven vehicles, stating that he bought only two vehicles, in line with what Members of Parliament are entitled to acquire.ICC Probes Police Inaction in Namiwa Attack

The minister also maintains that his hotel business dates back to 2016 and has been the main source of his wealth, rejecting suggestions that his assets were acquired through improper means.

The dispute stems from growing public scrutiny over the assets of public officials and renewed calls by civil society organisations for greater transparency and accountability in government.
