Mulanje District Council on Monday elected Councillors Daniel Chauluka of Chole Ward and Dickson Kamowa of Namboya Ward as chairperson and vice chairperson respectively during an elective meeting that was held at the district council chamber.
Daniel Chauluka went unopposed while Dickson Kamowa defeated Nyepwa Namoyo of Nkumbiza Ward with 13 to 12 votes respectively.
In his acceptance speech, after the elections that were conducted by Malawi Electoral Commission, Chauluka asked council members and staff to join hands in the implementation of various council activities to benefit the people of Mulanje.
The newly elected chairperson said he will continue to work where the former chairperson stopped and he will make sure that Mulanje is at par with developmental projects and activities.
“With the powers that district chairperson is capacitated with, I will make sure that the council collects enough revenue as we used to do way back which assists council operations,” he said.
Chauluka further said that for smooth collection of revenue in the local markets they will increase awareness engagements on the importance of business persons paying taxes to the council.
He promised to provide an oversight role to the council for the good of the people in the district.
“On the other hand, I will make sure that we provide checks and balances to the district secretariat and implement government plans in time for the benefit of Mulanje people,” he said.
Meanwhile, the outgoing chairperson Thokozani Namoyo of Mtenjera Ward appreciated the council for supporting him during his tenure, saying whatever he had achieved while serving was because there was good collaboration among them, and that they should do the same with the newly elected chairperson.
