The Malawi Embassy in Mozambique has issued a strong advisory to all Malawians and commuters traveling through Mozambique, urging them to exercise caution due to a planned two-day lockdown in the country. The advisory follows peaceful demonstrations set to take place from Thursday, October 24, to Friday, October 25, in protest of electoral disputes following Mozambique’s recent elections.
In a pre-recorded message, Consular General Happy Saka highlighted the growing tensions in Mozambique and urged Malawian travelers, including bus and truck drivers, to take extra precautions while navigating through the country during this period of unrest. “We advise all commuters to be extremely vigilant, plan their journeys carefully, and avoid traveling during the lockdown,” Saka emphasized.
The embassy also advised Malawian parents residing in Mozambique to keep their children at home during the demonstrations to ensure their safety. “It is crucial for parents to remain cautious and ensure their families are safe during this time of heightened tension,” Saka added.
Mozambique recently concluded elections, and the post-election period has been marked by increasing unrest, with the opposition candidate declaring victory before the official results were announced. This has triggered protests and heightened concerns about the country’s stability, leading to the planned lockdown.
The Malawi Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to assist Malawian citizens in Mozambique throughout this period of uncertainty. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and follow official updates from the embassy and local authorities.
