Minister of Defence, Harry Mkandawire, has called upon the corporate sector and the public to extend their support for Malawi’s war veterans, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and honoring their sacrifices. Speaking at a recent event honoring the country’s former soldiers, Mkandawire highlighted the challenges that many veterans face in their post-service lives and stressed the need for ongoing assistance.
The minister pointed out that while government programs provide some support, additional resources from the private sector and the general public would greatly improve the veterans’ quality of life. Mkandawire noted that the veterans have made significant contributions to the country and deserve dignity and respect in return.

“Our veterans have given so much in service to the nation. It is now our duty to stand by them in their time of need,” he said, urging companies and individuals to contribute in any way possible—whether through financial donations, healthcare provisions, or housing support.
This appeal comes as part of a broader government effort to improve veterans’ welfare and ensure that their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. Mkandawire’s call has already received positive feedback from several companies and organizations, indicating potential partnerships and community initiatives to assist veterans.
By fostering a culture of gratitude and responsibility, Mkandawire hopes that Malawi can provide these veterans with the care and support they deserve for their service to the nation.
