In a crucial address aimed at ensuring the integrity of the electoral process, District Commissioner for Nkhata Bay, Rodgers Newa, has called on voter registration supervisors to perform their duties within the legal framework established by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC). Newa made this appeal during a training monitoring session held at Nkhata Bay Boma in preparation for the upcoming second phase of voter registration, scheduled to commence on November 9, 2024.

“Let me commend you for taking up this noble course of serving your country. As you go out to various centres after this training, please discharge your duties within the law. Your work is supported by a legal framework designed to ensure that the interests of every Malawian are met, ultimately guaranteeing free and fair elections,” Newa stated, emphasizing the importance of legality in the registration process.

Newa’s remarks came as part of an initiative to prepare the voter registration supervisors, highlighting the need for impartiality in their roles. He urged the supervisors to represent the interests of all political parties while meticulously following the procedures outlined by the MEC. This approach aims to foster a transparent and credible electoral environment, which is essential for the democratic process.

Trainee supervisor Andrew Sidila expressed confidence in the upcoming registration exercise, noting that the training provided essential skills necessary for their roles. “We are ready to serve the public with excellence,” Sidila stated, reflecting the commitment of the supervisors to uphold the principles of integrity and fairness throughout the voter registration process.

In addition to the training, MEC has ramped up its outreach efforts by holding interface meetings with traditional and faith leaders across Nkhata Bay. These meetings aim to inform community leaders about the voter registration process while mobilizing citizens to register in preparation for the September 16, 2025 General Election.

As Malawi gears up for this vital electoral phase, the focus on legal compliance and community engagement underscores the commitment to enhancing the democratic process, ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in shaping the nation’s future.
