A Nation Under Siege: When Leaders Turn Against Their People

By Comrade jumbe

I write what I see…..

“When the drumbeat changes, so must the dance.” Today, Malawi finds itself in a troubling rhythm, one orchestrated not by the people but by a government that seems to have forgotten its role.

The revelation that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-led government has spent a staggering K2 billion on a spying machine through MACRA is a betrayal that cuts deep.

Ar a time when the nation cries out for food, fuel, and hope, our leaders have chosen to prioritize fear over progress.

“The mouth that eats does not forget the hand that feeds it.” Yet, this government seems to have forgotten the very people who placed it in power.

While Malawians queue at fuel pumps that are perpetually dry, while farmers face a barren season without fertilizer, and while hunger threatens to engulf the nation, the government has decided to use taxpayers’ money to spy on its own citizens. This is not leadership—it is cowardice masquerading as governance.

The timing of this decision raises even graver concerns. Why, on the eve of general elections, does the government feel the need to monitor conversations?

“A hyena smells blood long before the kill.” Is this an admission that the elections will not be free and fair? Is this an attempt to suffocate the voices of those who dare to demand accountability?

“The bird that flies off the earth and lands on an anthill is still on the ground.” No amount of surveillance will erase the reality on the ground.

Malawi is suffering. The rains have been unstable, hunger looms, and the cost of living has spiraled beyond reach.

These are the issues that demand attention, not the imagined “threat” of citizens speaking their truth.

The two billion kwacha squandered on this spying machine could have been used to import fuel, subsidize fertilizer, or alleviate the unbearable hardships Malawians face daily.
Instead, it has been used to build walls of fear between the government and its people.

“A leader who does not listen to advice will eventually hear the cry of the people.”

Let it be known: we, the citizens of Malawi, will not be silenced. This nation belongs to all of us, not to a select few who wield power for their own benefit.

MACRA and other state institutions must serve the people, not be weaponized to fight political battles.

The government’s decision to prioritize surveillance over service is not only unjust but also immoral.

“The sun will set no matter how long the day.” This administration must realize that its time in power is not eternal.

The people of Malawi are watching, and they will remember this betrayal.

Arrest me, arrest every Malawian who dares to speak out, but the truth will not be buried.
“A lie has many variations, but the truth has none.”

We demand that this decision be reversed immediately.

The government must redirect its focus to solving the real problems we face: fuel shortages, hunger, skyrocketing prices, and the plight of our farmers. Malawi’s future depends on it.

“The child who does not cry dies in silence.” We, the citizens, will not remain silent. If this government continues on its current path and spying citizens, it will awaken the spirit of a people who refuse to be intimidated.

“Even the best cooking pot will not produce food without fire.” True leadership requires action, compassion, and wisdom—not fear and control.

The choice before the government is clear: serve the people or face their wrath.

“A snake that does not show its fangs should not think it is loved.” The people of Malawi will rise to protect their democracy, their freedom, and their dignity.

Let the message be clear: “When the roots are deep, the wind cannot break the tree.”

Malawi belongs to us all. Let no one forget that truth.

My pen is mightier than a sword.
