The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has introduced a ban prohibiting unauthorized vending on campus.
Confirming the development, Chief Security Officer for Kerma Security Services, Mr. Patrick Muliya, said the ban has been imposed on motorcycle taxi operators to enforce quietness on the campus, as they produce excessive noise.
“Selling mandazi and other foodstuffs is also prohibited as a means of reducing theft issues in student rooms within the campus, as some of these vendors may be thieves,” Muliya added.
However, one of the vendors, Patrick Chimwaza, a boiled egg seller from Chikanda, lamented that the ban has affected his business.
“The majority of my customers reside on campus, which means I am unable to sell eggs on campus following the ban,” Chimwaza said.
