Medical Council probes maternal deaths at Mzimba District Hospital

The Medical Council of Malawi has confirmed that it is currently investigating two cases involving the deaths of women during labour at Mzimba District Hospital.

The deaths occurred in February this year and follow complaints lodged by concerned individuals.

In a written response, the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Davie Zolowere, expressed optimism that the investigations will be concluded by 30 June.

He further indicated that the findings of the investigations may be released by July this year.

Meanwhile, the District Medical Officer at Mzimba District Hospital, Dr. Angelo Mwaungulu, has attributed the February maternal deaths to malfunctioning equipment in the hospital’s theatre.

Dr. Mwaungulu assured the public that the faulty equipment has since been repaired and is now fully operational.

He also addressed another recent case involving the death of a woman and her baby last week.

According to Dr. Mwaungulu, the woman delivered at home and arrived late at the hospital after losing a significant amount of blood, which contributed to the tragedy.

The hospital has recently come under scrutiny from residents in the district, who have raised concerns over the rising number of maternal deaths during labour, particularly after surgical interventions.

Some members of the public have gone as far as alleging negligence on the part of hospital staff, fueling calls for accountability and improved maternal care services.
