AFORD President Enock Chihana urges opposition unity to unseat MCP in September Elections

By Burnett Munthali

Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana has called on opposition leaders to form a united front to defeat President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the upcoming September 16 General Elections.

Chihana suggested that former President Peter Arthur Peter Mutharika should lead this coalition, citing his popularity and experience.

Speaking during a series of rallies in Zomba, Chihana stressed that Malawi cannot afford a fragmented opposition, especially at a time when citizens are struggling with the high cost of living, unemployment, and unfulfilled promises.

“We must set aside our differences, our pride, and come together to rescue Malawians from the unbearable cost of living, joblessness, and broken promises,” Chihana said.

He added that Peter Mutharika remains the most popular and trusted among opposition leaders and possesses the experience and support necessary to lead such an alliance.

President Chakwera, who assumed power in 2020, will face 17 challengers in what is shaping up to be one of Malawi’s most competitive elections.

Among the other key contenders are Joyce Banda of the People’s Party, Dalitso Kabambe of the UTM, and Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Chihana warned that with 18 presidential candidates on the ballot, opposition votes risk being split, which would ultimately benefit the ruling party.

Chihana’s call for opposition unity underscores a critical strategic challenge facing Malawi’s political landscape ahead of the 2025 elections.

If the opposition fails to consolidate behind a single candidate, vote splitting could hand an easy victory to MCP and President Chakwera despite public dissatisfaction.

Conversely, a united opposition led by a figure like Peter Mutharika could present a formidable challenge, potentially reshaping Malawi’s political future.

The coming weeks will be crucial as opposition parties navigate their ambitions and alliances, with the stakes being the control of Malawi’s presidency and the direction of the nation.
