Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has said the Malawi Police Service is in discussions with Standard Bank to introduce an electronic payment system that will allow people to pay fines digitally when found guilty of offences such as traffic violations.
Mukhito said once the discussions are concluded, the government will announce the official date when the new system will take effect. Under the arrangement, motorists and other offenders will no longer pay fines directly to police officers in cash.Why Are Traffic Police Officers So Corrupt?
He was responding to a question from Ntchisi South Member of Parliament Peter Gamula, who wanted to know when the police would stop collecting fines in cash. Gamula argued that the current practice continues to fuel corruption and bribery on the country’s roads.
Mukhito said it is the government’s intention to roll out the electronic payment system as part of efforts to eliminate corruption and bribery involving traffic police officers.
