Minister of Trade Vitumbiko Mumba has called on Central Poultry (CP) to strengthen security measures at their Mpingu facility in Lilongwe, following a recent theft in which chickens and property worth over K2.5 billion were stolen.
The incident exposed serious security lapses at the site, where only a wire fence was in place and no security guards were deployed—despite the presence of high-value poultry.
Speaking after visiting the site, Mumba urged the company to consider building a brick perimeter wall and increasing on-site protection to prevent future incidents. He also encouraged CP to extend support to residents living near the facility, noting that strong community ties are essential for long-term business sustainability.
“Companies like CP must not only secure their investments but also invest in the well-being of surrounding communities,” Mumba emphasized. “That’s how trust and mutual protection grow.”
The minister’s remarks come amid growing concern over rising cases of theft targeting major agricultural businesses.
