Maize Prices Decline Across Malawi

According to the latest spot checks conducted by the Malawi Freedom Network, markets in multiple districts have reported lower maize prices compared to previous weeks. Analysts attribute this decline to the end of hoarding practices that were prevalent under the previous administration.

Impact of Previous Policies

During Lazarus Chakwera’s tenure, maize prices were artificially high, partly due to policies that encouraged farmers and traders to hoard maize. Chakwera also increased fertilizer costs, instructing people to sell two bags of maize in exchange for a single bag of fertilizer. These measures contributed to widespread poverty and hunger, leaving many Malawians struggling to afford basic mealsPastors Voice Endorses Peter Mutharika for Malawi Presidency.

Early Signs of Change Under APM

Even before his official swearing-in, APM’s leadership has begun to show positive effects on Malawi’s food security. Citizens are now able to access affordable maize and enjoy three meals a day, a milestone that the previous MCP administration under Chakwera failed to achieve.

Looking Ahead

Malawians are hopeful that under APM’s leadership, economic reforms and agricultural policies will continue to support food security and stabilize prices nationwide. The reduction in maize costs marks an important first step toward a stronger, more resilient Malawi.
