DPP unity and partial Independent support give Suleman the edge over Dimba in today’s crucial vote.

Sameer Suleman is poised to be elected Speaker of Parliament today.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) holds 81 seats, all expected to vote for Suleman.
Among the 67 Independent MPs, around half (34) are projected to support him.

Peter Dimba, meanwhile, is likely to get support from 53 Malawi Congress Party (MCP) MPs and the remaining 33 Independents.
This gives Suleman a total of 115 votes versus Dimba’s 86 votes.
Out of the 201 MPs considered, Suleman’s tally represents an estimated 57.2% of the parliamentary vote.
The numbers indicate a comfortable majority, making Suleman the likely winner of the Speakership.
His victory reflects DPP cohesion, strategic alliances with Independents, and his strong public profile.
It also highlights the decisive role that Independent MPs play in determining parliamentary leadership.
If elected, Suleman is expected to lead Parliament with authority, uphold independence, and drive reforms.
Today’s outcome is not just about numbers—it is a signal for accountability, fairness, and modernized legislative leadership in Malawi.
