Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Centre, Alfred Gangata, has underscored the need for meaningful youth involvement in national development, stating that Malawi’s sustainable socioeconomic progress depends heavily on empowering young people across different sectors.

Speaking at Chilimampunga Ground in Mtandire, Lilongwe, Gangata—who also serves as Minister of State—called for deliberate efforts to prioritize youth and women who tirelessly contributed to the party’s success in the September 16 elections. He emphasized that such loyal and committed individuals deserve equal access to employment opportunities, especially within government institutions and development programs.
“We must recognise and reward those who stood with us, particularly the youth and women who sacrificed their time and resources. They should not be left behind when opportunities arise,” Gangata said.
The rally also doubled as a celebration following the election of Alex Banda, Councillor for Mtsiriza Ward, as Mayor of Lilongwe City. Gangata hailed Banda’s rise to the position, describing it as a significant victory for both the DPP and the local community.
“We are proud of the people of Mtandire and Mtsiriza for believing in the DPP agenda. This victory reflects hope, unity and renewed leadership,” he added.
The event further highlighted the recent court ruling instructing the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to declare the rightful winner of the contested parliamentary seat in the area, a development that energised supporters in attendance.
Local leaders and party supporters celebrated the court’s decision as a milestone for justice and democracy, while reaffirming their commitment to solidify the party’s presence across Lilongwe and the nation at large.
The DPP continues to position itself as a champion of youth empowerment, promising a renewed focus on inclusive development, job creation, and accountable leadership.
