President of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Atupele Muluzi, has called for immediate and coordinated action to address Malawi’s worsening economic crisis, warning that any further delays will intensify hardships for citizens across the country.

In a strongly worded statement, Muluzi described the current economic situation as one of the most severe challenges Malawi has faced since the transition to multiparty democracy in 1994. He noted that households, businesses, and public institutions are all under mounting pressure due to rising inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and persistent fuel supply disruptions.

Malawi’s Economic Crisis Deepens

According to Muluzi, the economic strain is evident in everyday life, with ordinary Malawians struggling to afford basic commodities while businesses grapple with high operational costs and limited access to forex. Public institutions, he added, are also facing resource constraints that are undermining service delivery.

He stressed that without urgent reforms, the country risks further economic deterioration, reduced investor confidence, and prolonged instability.

Support for Global Recovery Framework

Muluzi welcomed a recently released joint report by the African Development Bank, United Nations, and the World Bank Group, developed in collaboration with the Malawi Government.

He described the report as a timely and strategic roadmap that outlines critical policy priorities aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and driving sustainable economic growth.

Call for Unity and Collective Action

The UDF leader emphasised the need for unity among political stakeholders, the private sector, and development partners, arguing that the scale of the crisis requires a collective national response rather than political blame games.

He urged leaders across the political divide to prioritise national interest and work together to implement practical solutions that can stabilise the economy and restore public trust.

Warning Against Inaction

Muluzi cautioned that failure to act decisively could worsen the already fragile situation, placing an even heavier burden on ordinary citizens who are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn.

“There is no time to waste,” he said, underscoring the urgency of implementing reforms and restoring economic stability.

Outlook

As Malawi navigates a complex economic landscape marked by inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions, Muluzi’s remarks add to growing calls for swift policy action and coordinated leadership.
