A concerned citizen of Malawi Mrs. Elizabeth Kaliza Banda of Area 51 in Lilongwe, has spoken in support of Professor John Chisi for the country to take down Kamuzu Day 14th May, on the calendar of Malawi.

Professor Chisi has been quoted in the media having said that there is no justification for recognizing a man who committed wickedness and atrocities against humanity.

Chisi while shedding tears, cited murder of innocent citizens by throwing them in the Shire River as crocodile meat, adulterous life, and confiscation of private property, among others, that all belong to Kamuzu Banda.

Three month after Malawi became independent in 1964 Kamuzu Banda’s government was shaken with Kanyama Chiune, Atati Mphakati, Henry Masauko Chipembere, Mkwapatira Mhango, Orton Edgar Ching’oli Chirwa fled into exile afraid of being killed by Kamuzu Banda.

Kaliza Banda has claimed that Kamuzu Banda made Malawians to forget about the history of the country by banning all books deemed to have contained the true history of Reverend John Chilembwe and other influential members of the then Nyasaland African Congress.

She said Kamuzu Banda did not know the history of Malawi, he spent most of his life outside the country and when he came back to Malawi, all the books were edited to suit his interest.

The citizen said on 18th May, 1983 Dick Matenje, Aaron Gadama, Twaibu Sangala and David Chiwanga were tragically murdered and their bodies were found at Thambani in Mwanza district.

She said Kamuzu Banda told the nation that the four cabinet ministers were planning to overthrow his government and as they were trying to ran away, their vehicle made an accident at Thambani in Mwanza killing all.

Kaliza Banda said during Kamuzu’s reign, Malawians have been celebrating his life on the 14th May, not because people were happy with him.as their leader but they were all afraid of being killed.

She said hundreds of people belonging to Jehovah’s witness suffered detention without trial, many were murdered and other’s fled into exile for committing one offense in the eyes of Kamuzu Banda – not paying for MCP cards showing full membership.

” Malawians are recognizing Kamuzu Day honoring the life of a dictator 14th May,” said Kaliza Banda

She has appealed to government to hold an opinion poll on how many people wants Kamuzu Day for Malawians to decide for themselves on whether to continue remembering the Day or taking down the day from.the calendar.

Kaliza Banda said the MCP must be the party to be holding Kamuzu Day at family level without government involvement in spending resources meant for a function to benefit only MCP.
