MRA Records Over 500 Tax Evasion Cases at Kamuzu International Airport in 2025

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it has recorded more than 500 cases of tax evasion at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in 2025, raising concern over continued non-compliance by some importers.

MRA Station Manager at Kamuzu International Airport, Victor Msesa, said customs officials are registering more than 10 cases every week involving under-declaration, under-valuation and misclassification of imported goods.

Msesa said the fraudulent practices not only deprive the government of much-needed tax revenue but also negatively affect the credibility of importers within the ASYCUDA customs management system.MRA Beats April Revenue Target, Collects K532 Billion

He explained that importers found violating customs regulations are flagged in the system, increasing the likelihood of their future consignments being subjected to additional inspections and verification processes, which ultimately delays cargo clearance.

“The cases we continue to record every week demonstrate the need for importers to fully comply with customs requirements by making accurate declarations and correctly classifying imported goods,” said Msesa.MRA Nears E-Invoicing Registration Target as Revenue Collections Surpass Goal

He urged importers and clearing agents to comply with customs laws to facilitate faster clearance of goods, avoid penalties and contribute to increased domestic revenue collection.

The MRA has been intensifying enforcement measures at the country’s entry points to combat tax evasion and promote voluntary compliance, saying improved adherence to customs regulations is essential for protecting government revenue and facilitating legitimate trade.
