Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation Joseph Mwanavekha has confirmed that the 2026 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report has been completed but cannot yet be released to the public because it must first undergo several mandatory government processes.

According to the Minister, the report must first be presented to Cabinet, the MVAC committee, and development partners before it is made available to the public.

“The report is there, but it cannot be released immediately because there are procedures that have to be followed,” Mwanavekha explained.

The MVAC report, which was expected to be released in June this year, plays a crucial role in assessing food security and humanitarian needs across Malawi. The findings are used by government ministries, development partners, humanitarian organisations and other stakeholders to plan food assistance, agricultural support and disaster response initiatives, particularly in areas affected by drought, floods, economic challenges and other shocks.

The delay in releasing the report has generated interest among various stakeholders, including humanitarian agencies, civil society organisations and local communities, who rely on its findings for planning and resource mobilisation.

The government has not indicated an exact date for the publication of the report, but the Minister assured that it will be made public after all the necessary approval processes have been completed.
