Police in Malawi have arrested former Director General of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Charles Kalumo, on allegations of abuse of office and failure to comply with provisions of the Immigration Act (Malawi).
National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo confirmed that Kalumo, a retired brigadier, was arrested on Sunday afternoon at Kamuzu International Airport shortly after arriving from South Africa.
According to Chimtembo, the alleged offence dates back to June 2023 when Kalumo was serving as Director General of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
Authorities have not yet disclosed full details of the case but indicated that investigations are ongoing. Police say additional information regarding the allegations and possible charges will be made public in due course.
Kalumo, 74, hails from Kadzakalowa Village under Traditional Authority Njolomole in Ntcheu District.
The arrest comes as law enforcement authorities continue to pursue cases involving alleged abuse of public office and violations of government regulations. Kalumo is expected to appear in court once formal charges are filed.
