UTM President Dr Dalitso Kabambe has called on President Arthur Peter Mutharika to ensure that allegations of corruption, money laundering, human trafficking and public procurement irregularities are subjected to independent and impartial investigations.
In an open letter addressed to Mutharika, Kabambe said the allegations, some of which he said involve members of Cabinet and the judiciary, should not be ignored or dismissed through political rhetoric.
He urged the President to allow relevant institutions to investigate the claims carefully and without political interference, arguing that allegations of wrongdoing should be addressed through established legal and investigative processes.
Kabambe also expressed concern that some individuals around the President could be acting in ways that risk damaging the reputation of Mutharika’s administration and the Mutharika family name.
He cautioned against automatically portraying people who raise concerns about alleged misconduct as enemies of the government.
According to Kabambe, Malawians have a right to question decisions and raise grievances affecting the country, and such criticism should be handled through dialogue and accountability rather than intimidation.
The UTM leader further called on Mutharika to ensure that investigations are conducted impartially, regardless of the identities or positions of those who may be implicated.
He said no individual should be considered above the law and that public office should not be used to protect anyone accused of wrongdoing.
Kabambe also urged the President to address the nation on several challenges currently affecting Malawians, including fuel and cooking gas shortages, unreliable electricity supply, foreign-exchange pressures and the rising cost of living.
He said Malawians need reassurance that the government is taking allegations of corruption and human trafficking seriously and that institutions responsible for enforcing the law will be allowed to perform their duties independently.
Kabambe further called for the protection of the three arms of government from allegations of misconduct and from attempts to silence individuals who raise concerns about matters of public interest.
He said Malawi’s interests should come before those of any individual, political party or administration.
Kabambe appealed to Mutharika to protect the country’s institutions and his political legacy by ensuring that allegations are addressed through truth, fairness, accountability and due process.
The call comes amid continued public debate over governance, accountability and the government’s response to economic and institutional challenges facing Malawi.
