The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has suspended four food processing companies from production after inspectors uncovered serious food safety and hygiene violations during a nationwide factory surveillance exercise conducted between July 27 and July 31.

The regulatory body announced the decision through its official Facebook page, saying the affected companies were found to have critical non-conformities that posed significant concerns regarding food safety and hygiene standards.

According to MBS, the companies will remain barred from production until they fully implement corrective measures and satisfy the bureau that they meet the required national standards.Malawi Launches Nationwide Sanitation Plan to Enforce Public Hygiene Standards

The suspended companies are:

• Dilydada Limited – Cooking Oil
• Aimi Industries Limited – Maize Flour and Cooking Oil
• 88 Brothers – Cooking Oil
• Tianma Company Limited – Maize Flour and Cooking Oil

In addition to halting production, MBS has imposed strict enforcement measures against the companies.

Each of the four companies has been ordered to pay quarantine fees for products already manufactured and has also been issued with a non-compliance penalty of MK2 million.

“The affected companies have been suspended from production, charged quarantine fees for already produced goods and issued a non-compliance fee of MK2,000,000.00,” MBS said in its statement.

MBS further warned that inspections will continue across the country as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen consumer protection and improve compliance within Malawi’s food processing industry.

“The Bureau will continue conducting factory inspections and market surveillance to ensure that products comply with standards and are safe for consumers,” the statement added.

The development sends a strong warning to food manufacturers that failure to comply with food safety regulations will attract decisive regulatory action.

The latest enforcement action is expected to increase scrutiny of food manufacturers across Malawi, with consumers likely to demand greater accountability from companies responsible for producing essential household products such as cooking oil and maize flour.
