The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives ( CDEDI) Executive Director Comrade Sylvester Namiwa, has been charged of two counts: Treason and publication of false news likely to cause a breach of peace.

Namiwa is being accused of committing the two offences during an interview with Luntha television station in July, 2026.

Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda has committed Namiwa’s case to the High Court of Malawi for further court proceedings and bail to be granted.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has described Namiwa’s arrest and remand at Maula Prison as very unfortunate development happening in the DPP – the party calling itself the democrat.

Kamphangala said Namiwa is one of the foot soldiers who fought courageously sacrificing his life to die for change of the country’s leadership from Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

He said had it been that President Professor Mutharika invited all the foot soldiers to one place thanking them for the support rendered for him to bounce back into government, circumstances surrounding Namiwa’s arrest could not happen.OPINION: Namiwa Cried! Abale, Dziko Lija Lafika Apa?

The MCP diehard said Namiwa, just like Comrade Ntanyiwa, Bakili Muluzi TV, Bon Kalindo, Lytone Mangochi, Pastor Moses Shumba, Bishop Kachenje, and journalists Burnett Munthali, Suleman Chitera and Jones Gadama, have been crying aloud to President Professor Mutharika and the DPP to listen to their cries but not even one in the DPP heard of their cries including Professor Mutharika himself.

He said today, the DPP has arrested and charged Namiwa of treason and publication of false news likely to cause a breach of peace, tomorrow, it will be another one of the foot soldiers to be arrested for the same offence.

Kamphangala has appealed to President Professor Mutharika to intervene in the arrest of a foot soldier – Namiwa by signing a Presidential Decree that he has to be released from police custody without any condition.Namiwa Warns DPP: Malawians Can Remove Any Government That Fails the People

He said Namiwa has been arrested not because someone funded him but he has been crying for recognition for his contribution towards political change in the country.

” I plead with Professor Mutharika, have mercy on Namiwa, he is one of you, he rose from the dead after being brutally beaten by MCP panga wielding thugs, and today you have escorted him to
prison to rot and die there,” said Kamphangala.

He said it is sad that after doing a great job, foot soldiers have not been rewarded with “a big thank you” but what they have heard is that some people connected to DPP ministers have made their way to the state house and Embassies beside them being at the top of insulting and castigating Professor Mutharika of his old age describing this as very painful and heartbreaking to them.

Kamphangala has appealed to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to meet these foot soldiers and hear their cries assuring him that these people are sailing through pain and some of them are even struggling to get money for mobile phones data bundles.

He has finally reminded Professor Mutharika that Namiwa and other foot soldiers are his children, they have been with him in times of sorrow and happiness and they are still with him until he retires from active politics in 2030 advising Mutharika that not all can be given jobs but capital to start their own businesses to sustain their lives.
