Mutharika vows to contest in 2025 elections

Former Malawi president who is a leader of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Professor Peter Mutharika has again vowed that he will contest the 2025 elections and defeat the current administration.

Mutharika’s delusion of grandeur, the DPP is poised for a return into power charging “I, Peter Mutharika, am ready to lead DPP to victory again in 2025,”

He was speaking to members of press yesterday on Friday 8th March 2024 at his page house in Mangochi where he said, he will not only contest in next year’s presidential election but also to subjugate the Tonse alliance’s administration.

He reiterated that currently Malawi has lost direction the and has taken with myriad challenges and unfulfilled campaign promises.

He cited that: ” The country has a citizen by the name of Lazarus Chakwera but we don’t have a leader.

“We are now in Bagamoyo, a very bad place I am coming back. I will win again in 2025. I once did it and I will do it again.”

He faulted current administration for coming up with fabricated charges against him so that he should not stand in the forthcoming elections.

With bold statement, Mutharika also took a swipe at President Chakwera, who is also Malawi Congress Party-MCP leader, for allegedly governing using violence and intimidation on DPP supporters.

He made reference to the hacking of some DPP supporters in Lilongwe over two weeks ago by unknown thugs. Mutharika and the DPP claim the MCP supporters are responsible.

Police are yet to arrest any suspects with National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya, saying they are still proceeding with their investigations.

“Chakwera didn’t say anything on those attacks. But let me tell him that violence will not rescue Malawians from the economic challenges they face now. Violence will not bring food and passports,” said Mutharika.

Political analyst, Joseph Masina appear to acknowledge that the likelihood of Peter Mutharika reclaiming the Malawian presidency is slim, suggesting that he has become disconnected from reality.

“He is the epitome of antiquity, the embodiment of regionalism and tribalism, a veritable monument to incompetence and insensitivity,” scoffed Masina.

Masina added that Mutharika’s statement has words dripping with disdain.

“While he may command support in the Southern region, his prospects in the Central and Northen Regions are dim at best. With the stringent requirements of the 50% plus one rule, Chakwera’s victory in 2025 seems all but assured.”

Commenting on the matter, MCP spokesperson Ezekiel Ching’oma describes Mutharika’s claims as laughable and baseless, saying their party cannot sponsor thugs as it thrives on democratic principles and rule of law.

For almost 4 years, DPP party has been embroiled in never ending infighting leading to the expulsion of some senior members including Kondwani Nankhumwa, Grelzeder Jeffrey, Uladi Mussa and Mark Botoman among others.
