Relentless Former Minister of Civic Education and National Unity, Timothy Mtambo has lambasted the Tonse Administration for failing to improve the lives of Malawians, despite being in power for four years.
Addressing a press briefing in Lilongwe today, Mtambo, who is also the leader of the Citizens for Transformation (CFT) People Power Movement, highlighted the country’s persistent struggles with a beast-poverty, sugar, passport, and hunger crises.
Mtambo, a vocal activist, urged Malawians to stand up for their freedom and fight for a better future. He emphasized CFT’s readiness to collaborate with like-minded individuals to find solutions to the country’s socio-economic challenges, but called on the government to listen and take action.
“This is clearly not the change we all aspired for and for sure we cannot keep quiet as citizens; we have a duty to actively participate,” Mtambo said.
He said he is now back to activism because Malawians are suffering and the opposition is failing to provide checks and balances to the government.
Mtambo lamented that the cabinet salary was insufficient to cover his children’s school fees, attempting to justify his resentment over his abrupt dismissal. He added that despite his claims, many view his grievances as thinly veiled attempts to regain political relevance.
He has therefore, vowed to unveil strategic maneuvers against the Chakwera government.
However, voices on social media are echoing skepticism, asserting that Mtambo’s solo crusade lacks the grassroots support needed to effect real change. Skeptics on social media are questioning his motives, wondering if his newfound zeal for opposition is simply fueled by personal grievances over losing access to the perks of power.
In his remarks, country’s good governance and political commentator, Undule Mwakasungula criticised Mtambo for criticizing Govt without providing solutions.
Mwakasungula has advised Mtambo to be part of solution in turning Malawi better place to live.
In an interview with Our News Platform Mw, Democratic Progressive Party–PP’s leader in parliament, Mary Navicha has remarked, “If Mtambo were still part of the cabinet, he would have remained silent. Now that he’s out, suddenly he’s the champion of the people. He’s in this for himself, not us. He’ll find himself fighting alone.”
In response, Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu requested more time to comment on the matter.
