The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has alleged that recent public remarks by Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa are part of an effort to promote First Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah as Malawi’s next President.

Matoga further alleged that there are efforts to mobilize civil society organizations to fuel public debate about the presidency, although he did not provide evidence to support the claims.

He emphasized that Malawi’s Constitution recognizes only one sitting President at a time, warning that discussions suggesting an imminent change of leadership while the current President remains in office could undermine constitutional order.

The remarks come as Namiwa remains in police custody in Lilongwe. Police are yet to issue an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding his detention.
