Veteran politician Joseph Njobvuyalema has joined the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), citing what he describes as focused and mature leadership under the party’s leadership.

Njobvuyalema announced his decision on Saturday during an event organised to officially welcome him into the DPP at Ming’ongo Ground in the area of Senior Chief Kalolo in Lilongwe.

Explaining his decision to join the governing party, Njobvuyalema praised the maturity of DPP leadership, particularly the way senior government officials are handling national affairs.

“If you look at DPP leadership, it has very mature people. Even most of the senior cabinet ministers are mature people. The way they are handling matters of the state, I find them to be very focused,” he said.

His move marks a significant political development in the area, considering his longstanding political association with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), under which he served as Member of Parliament for many years.

The decision also represents another political gain for the governing party as it continues to attract experienced political figures.

DPP Deputy Regional Governor for the Central Region, Grey Kapute, welcomed Njobvuyalema’s decision, describing it as evidence that the party continues to grow.

Kapute said Njobvuyalema brings considerable political experience to the DPP, adding that his entry would strengthen the party’s political base.

Njobvuyalema’s political realignment comes at a time when political parties are seeking to consolidate their support and strengthen their grassroots structures ahead of future political contests.

His experience and previous representation under the MCP could make his move politically significant, particularly in Lilongwe, where competition for grassroots support remains important.

The development is expected to attract attention among political observers as the DPP continues positioning itself as the governing party under President Peter Mutharika.
