Tigresses produced a dominant performance on Saturday, beating Prison Queens 63-44 in a Week Five first-round match of the FDH Premier Netball League at Blantyre Sports Arena.
Tigresses controlled the game from the opening whistle and maintained their advantage throughout all four quarters to secure a convincing 19-goal victory over Prison Queens.
The result underlined Tigresses’ growing form in the FDH Premier Netball League, as they delivered a disciplined performance against a Prison Queens side that struggled to match their intensity.
Tigresses Dominate Prison Queens
Tigresses made their intentions clear from the start, taking control of the match and ensuring that Prison Queens had little opportunity to stage a comeback.
The Blantyre-based side remained composed throughout the encounter, winning every quarter on their way to a 63-44 victory.
Tigresses coach Peace Kalua praised her players for following the tactical plan and said the performance demonstrated that the team has the potential to improve further.
“The game was good and the players played well. They followed what we had planned and showed that they can play better,” Kalua said.
Tigresses Face Sponsorship Challenge
Despite the impressive victory, Kalua revealed that Tigresses continue to face a major challenge due to a lack of sponsorship.
She said the team currently has only nine players, instead of the recommended squad of 12, making it difficult to maintain adequate squad depth throughout the league campaign.
“We do not have enough players because we do not have a sponsor. We are only nine players instead of 12, so with enough players and sponsorship, we could do much better,” she said.
Kalua’s comments highlight the wider challenges facing netball teams in Malawi, where financial support can play a major role in player development, preparation and competitiveness.
Prison Queens Remain Hopeful
Prison Queens assistant coach Besten Zanda accepted the defeat but praised his players for their effort and determination.
“The players did their best and we are happy with the way they played. We will continue helping them to improve,” Zanda said.
Prison Queens had earlier secured a 49-34 victory over Pacers before facing Tigresses later in the day.
Zanda remains optimistic about the team’s chances of climbing the FDH Premier Netball League table, saying the side currently has six points.
“We have six points and we believe that if things go well, we can rise on the log table,” he said.
