District Nursing and Midwifery Officer for Likoma, Modester Banda has asked nurses in the district to be professional and exemplary when discharging their duties.

Banda made the remarks Friday during the commemoration of International Nurses Day in Likoma which started with marching from St Peter’s Hospital to the District Commissioner’s (DC) office where they presented a petition on issues affecting them.

“Nurses should remember what they are supposed to do professionally. Our ethics stipulate that as nurses, we should treat patients with respect and keep their confidentiality” she said.

St Peter’s Hospital Matron, Nyuma Manda said the day was very important as nurses are celebrated for the noble work they do.

Chief Administrative Officer for the Council, Yohane Bilesi said the work of the nurses should not be undermined since they work day and night to deliver health services to people.

“We need to appreciate the work of nurses and support them so that they continue performing well,” said Bilesi.

Bilesi said he was aware of the shortfall of nurses which was at 70 percent, saying the council would soon advertise vacant posts to reverse the trend.
