The St Egidio community in Mzuzu City has reinstated its vital children’s feeding program, providing essential support to vulnerable kids’ education amidst economic challenges.
After a temporary suspension due to procurement difficulties, the community-driven initiative has been revived, ensuring that children from disadvantaged backgrounds can continue learning without the burden of hunger.
According to Programs Coordinator Crief Daniel, “Children’s rights are infringed when they lack food, hindering sustainable education.”

The program, part of St Egidio’s School of Peace, has partnered with Belisa Center for Food Malawi to improve livelihoods, particularly in Masasa Township, where many residents live below the poverty line.
Meanwhile, William Chikweta Kaweche, a parliamentary aspirant for Mzuzu City’s south-east constituency, has pledged to support this St Egidio’s initiative aimed at addressing socioeconomic challenges hindering the progress of children in Masasa Township.
Recently, in a significant development, Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, met with Professor Marco Impagliazzo, President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, at the Community’s headquarters in Rome. Chakwera expressed interest in the progress of Sant’Egidio’s developmental work in Malawi, which has been ongoing since 2000.
Sant’Egidio’s initiatives in Malawi include: supporting Orphans by Providing life-saving services to 8,000 orphans across Malawi through Schools of Peace.
It also provide prison support: assisting 14 of Malawi’s prisons apart from the health intervention, implementing the DREAM (Drug Resource Enhancement Against AIDS and Malnutrition) Programme in 13 Health Centres.
Rescuing Street Children the community is operating the House of Friendship and House of Hope in major cities to which Professor Impagliazzo pledged to support Malawi’s vision, aligning development work with the aspirations, values, pillars, and enablers of the Malawi 2063 Vision, and promoting volunteerism among youth.
