The E-Sports Association of Malawi (ESAM) is thrilled to host its first-ever national e-sports championships, set to take place tomorrow at Khichini Hub in Lilongwe. The highly anticipated event promises an exciting showcase of local talent as gamers from across Malawi compete for national recognition and the opportunity to represent the country on an international stage.
ESAM’s vice president, Robert Cheleuka, shared that the competitors for this championship were selected through regional qualifiers held in the Central and Southern regions. In the EAFC24 category, Brandon Agius will face off against Walinase Phiri, while the Tekken 8 tournament will feature Timothy Mtambo (not the politician) battling Fyaupi Winga. In the women’s Tekken 8 division, Gwyneth Matimbe and Thokoza Uka will go head-to-head for the national title.
Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa stated that the council is proud to support the event, especially after ESAM registered as an official sport governing body in Malawi. This recognition marks a milestone for e-sports in the country, underscoring its growing popularity and potential within the Malawian sports community.
The stakes are high, particularly for the women’s Tekken 8 category, as the champion will go on to represent Malawi at the prestigious Mzansi E-Sports Championship in South Africa, held during the Rage Expo—Africa’s largest gathering for gaming and technology enthusiasts.
This inaugural championship marks a promising step forward for Malawi’s e-sports scene, offering local players a platform to showcase their skills and gain visibility in the international gaming community.
