Cancer Survivors Quest Urges Collective Action in Cancer Awareness Ahead of Walkerthorn Event

Cancer Survivors Quest, a leading organization in Malawi’s fight against cancer, has called on Malawians to unite in raising awareness about the disease. The appeal comes as the organization gears up for its annual Walkerthorn event, which is scheduled to take place this Sunday.

Speaking in an interview with MBC, Cancer Survivors Quest founder and director, Chikhulupiro Stanley Ng’ombe, emphasized the importance of collective action in the battle against cancer. He noted that increasing awareness is crucial in ensuring early detection and treatment, which can significantly improve survival rates.

“Our goal is to educate people about cancer and encourage them to take proactive measures, such as early screening and adopting healthier lifestyles. Cancer is a growing public health challenge in Malawi, and it requires a united effort from individuals, communities, and the government to combat it effectively,” Ng’ombe said.

The Walkerthorn event, which involves a walk from Blantyre to Thyolo, has become a key fixture in Malawi’s cancer awareness calendar. Held annually on the Sunday before World Cancer Day (February 4), the initiative aims to bring together cancer survivors, families, health professionals, and supporters to spread vital information about prevention, early detection, and treatment options.

Ng’ombe further highlighted that the event serves as a platform to debunk myths surrounding cancer, reduce stigma, and offer support to those affected by the disease. He urged Malawians to actively participate in the walk and contribute to raising awareness in their communities.

In recent years, Malawi has seen a rise in cancer cases, with common types including cervical, breast, and prostate cancer. However, limited access to screening and treatment facilities has made it difficult for many patients to receive timely medical attention. Organizations like Cancer Survivors Quest continue to advocate for better healthcare policies, improved cancer care services, and increased public education on the disease.

As preparations for the Walkerthorn event gain momentum, Ng’ombe expressed optimism that the initiative will inspire more Malawians to join the fight against cancer. He called on individuals, corporate entities, and policymakers to support cancer awareness programs and ensure that no one faces the disease alone.

The event is expected to attract hundreds of participants, including medical professionals and government representatives, all united in the common goal of making cancer awareness a national priority.
