A new chapter in the issuance of travel documents in Malawi is set to begin, as the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has announced that Madras Security Printers, the newly contracted service provider, is expected to commence printing passports by mid-July this year.
The development brings renewed hope to thousands of Malawians who have faced delays in accessing passport services in recent months.
According to the department’s spokesperson, Pasqually Zulu, Madras Security Printers is currently finalizing the integration of its systems with local banks and key government institutions, including the National Registration Bureau (NRB), to ensure smooth, modern, and mobile-based passport service delivery.
“We are optimistic. If all the digital passport production equipment is installed and configured on schedule, we should begin issuing passports by mid-July,” said Zulu.
The integration aims to simplify and decentralize the application process, making passport services more accessible to citizens across the country.
Commenting on the development, Willy Kambwandira, Executive Director of the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT), expressed confidence in the new arrangement. He noted that Madras Security Printers has the capacity and experience to deliver timely and efficient passport services.
“We expect the transition to bring an end to the persistent delays that have affected Malawians’ ability to access travel documents,” Kambwandira said. “It’s time we had a system that works for the people.”
Madras Security Printers replaces E-Tech Systems, whose contract was not renewed. The shift comes amid increasing demand for passports and a need to modernize the country’s document issuance systems.
If successful, the rollout of this new service will mark a significant step forward in improving public service delivery and restoring public trust in the immigration system.
