Malawi’s Vice President and leader of the Odya Zake Party, Michael Usi, has sparked debate after openly declaring that the current government is infested with “thieves” who continue to deceive Malawians with empty promises.

Speaking during a political rally at Makawa Market in Mangochi District, Usi—who is also popularly known as Alibe Mulandu—said he will not remain silent while corrupt leaders enrich themselves at the expense of ordinary citizens.

“I know I have now become enemy number one, but I do not care. Whatever happens, happens. I will not allow some people to steal while others are suffering,” Usi said.

The Vice President added that, being part of government, he is fully aware of the corruption and dishonesty taking place in the system. He stressed that Malawians should not be fooled again, especially as the nation prepares for the September 16 elections.

His remarks have, however, drawn sharp criticism from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). At a press conference in Lilongwe, MCP officials argued that Usi’s statements contradict government policy and undermine his role as Vice President.
