CDEDI Demands Accountability from Former President Chakwera Over K67 Billion Expenditure
By Burnett Munthali
The Centre for Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has called on former President Lazarus Chakwera to publicly explain how he used a budget allocation of 67 billion kwacha within a period of just six months.
CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa made the remarks during a press briefing held in Blantyre, where he expressed concern over what he described as questionable expenditure under the former administration.
Namiwa said Malawians have a right to know how such a significant amount of public funds was utilised, especially at a time when the country continues to face economic challenges.
He argued that transparency and accountability are critical pillars of good governance, and therefore, any suspected misuse of funds must be clarified without delay.
Namiwa stressed that unanswered questions surrounding the K67 billion expenditure risk eroding public trust in leaders and institutions.
In addition to the financial concerns, Namiwa also demanded that government institute a comprehensive and independent report on the plane crash that claimed the life of the Vice President.
He said Malawians deserve to know the full truth about what happened during the tragic incident, noting that speculation continues to grow due to the lack of official clarity.
Namiwa emphasised that the findings of such a report would help bring closure to the nation and ensure accountability in matters of national security.
He further noted that transparency in handling the crash investigation would demonstrate government’s commitment to upholding democratic values.
CDEDI’s call adds to increasing public pressure for authorities to address lingering questions regarding both the expenditure and the fatal plane crash.
The organisation has urged leaders to prioritise honesty, responsibility, and the protection of citizens’ rights as Malawi navigates its governance and economic challenges.
The call by CDEDI reflects a broader demand for accountability and openness in public service, as Malawians continue to seek clarity on issues that deeply affect national trust and stability.
