Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Honourable Simplex Chithyola, has urged the government to take decisive action in addressing the rising cost of fuel by considering the removal of certain taxes, particularly fuel levies.

Speaking to journalists, Chithyola emphasized that reducing or scrapping some of these levies could play a significant role in lowering pump prices, thereby easing the financial strain currently faced by Malawians. He noted that the continued increase in fuel prices has had a ripple effect across the economy, pushing the cost of transportation and basic goods beyond the reach of many citizens.

Chithyola expressed concern that a growing number of Malawians are being pushed into deeper poverty as they struggle to cope with escalating living expenses. He pointed out that public transport fares have become increasingly unaffordable, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to access essential services and sustain their daily livelihoods.

“The situation demands urgent intervention,” he said, stressing that government must prioritize the welfare of its citizens by exploring practical solutions that can bring immediate relief.

He further called on authorities to engage stakeholders in the energy sector to find sustainable ways of stabilizing fuel prices while safeguarding the economy.

As the debate over fuel pricing intensifies, Chithyola’s remarks add to mounting pressure on the government to implement measures that will cushion Malawians from the harsh economic realities triggered by high fuel costs.
