The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government under President has disbursed approximately MK39 billion to 88 contractors for the rehabilitation of roads across Malawi, in what authorities describe as a decisive move to address years of infrastructure neglect.

According to sources within the administration, the targeted roads had not undergone maintenance between 2020 and 2025, a period under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leadership. The prolonged lack of attention has left many roads severely damaged, posing serious risks to motorists and contributing to a rise in road accidents nationwide.
INFRASTRUCTURE IN CRISIS
Across major cities and rural districts alike, road conditions have deteriorated to alarming levels. Pothole-ridden highways, eroded surfaces, and impassable routes have become a daily challenge for Malawians.

Transport operators and commuters have expressed frustration, citing increased vehicle damage, higher transport costs, and delays in the movement of goods and services.
DPP RESPONSE
The DPP administration insists the MK39 billion investment demonstrates its commitment to restoring the country’s road network and fulfilling campaign promises.
Government officials argue that the rehabilitation program is not only about fixing roads but also about reviving economic activity, improving connectivity, and enhancing public safety.
CRITICISM AND CONCERNS
However, critics argue that while the funding is significant, the situation on the ground remains dire. Many roads are still in poor condition, raising questions about implementation efficiency, contractor performance, and accountability.

Some observers have also pointed out that delayed interventions may have worsened the damage, making rehabilitation more costly and complex.
PUBLIC SAFETY AT RISK
Road safety advocates warn that deteriorating infrastructure continues to contribute to fatal accidents, urging authorities to accelerate repair works and enforce stricter quality controls.
THE BIG QUESTION
As billions are being spent, Malawians are asking:
Will this investment translate into real change, or is it too little, too late?
