The Chinese Government has announced that the first tranche of its additional US$3 million emergency assistance package for Malawi will begin arriving in November, reinforcing Beijing’s commitment to supporting the country’s humanitarian and development needs.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Lu Xu made the announcement in Lilongwe on Tuesday during celebrations marking the 99th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The event also highlighted the growing diplomatic and military partnership between China and Malawi.

She said the additional support demonstrates China’s continued commitment to standing with Malawi during difficult times and strengthening the long-standing friendship between the two nations.

“The first tranche of the additional US$3 million emergency assistance package will begin arriving in November,” Xu said, noting that China remains committed to helping Malawi respond to humanitarian challenges while promoting sustainable development.

The ambassador said China values its comprehensive partnership with Malawi and will continue working closely with the government across various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, health, education, disaster response and defence.

According to Xu, cooperation between the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the Malawi Defence Force reflects a shared commitment to promoting peace, regional stability and mutual security.

She said the defence partnership has expanded over the years through training programmes, professional exchanges and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Malawi’s armed forces.

Speaking during the event, Malawi’s Minister of Defence, Feston Kaupa, expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government for its continued support towards the modernisation of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

Kaupa said China has become one of Malawi’s key strategic partners in defence cooperation by providing military education opportunities, specialised training programmes and institutional capacity-building support.

He noted that the collaboration has contributed significantly to strengthening the professionalism and operational effectiveness of the Malawi Defence Force.

The minister further said Malawi appreciates China’s willingness to share expertise and resources that have helped improve the country’s defence capabilities.

He called for deeper collaboration that would enable Malawi to build stronger technical capacity and improve the efficiency of its defence institutions.

“China has been a reliable partner in supporting the Malawi Defence Force through education, specialised training and capacity building. We look forward to expanding this cooperation, especially in technology transfer and logistics,” Kaupa said.

The latest emergency assistance package comes as Malawi continues to face economic pressures, food insecurity and climate-related challenges that have affected thousands of households across the country.

China has remained one of Malawi’s major bilateral development partners since diplomatic relations were established in 2007, supporting projects in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, energy and public services.
