The Malawi Police Service has launched a murder investigation following the death of an Indian national who was allegedly tortured for nearly two weeks after being accused of stealing 5 kilograms of gold in Blantyre.

The deceased, identified as Asif Khan, reportedly died on 6 July 2026 after allegedly being held against his will and subjected to repeated assaults at Mudi Location in Limbe Township.

According to information gathered by Mibawa Television from a source within the Asian community, Khan worked at an electronics shop in Limbe and was accused of stealing approximately 5 kilograms of gold belonging to another Asian businessman.

The source alleges that after the accusation, Khan was forcibly detained by individuals who believed he had stolen the gold. During the alleged two-week ordeal, he was reportedly tortured and physically assaulted before eventually succumbing to his injuries.

Following his death, Khan was buried at Kanjedza Cemetery.

The allegations have sparked concern among members of the public, with many calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Police Confirm Investigation

National Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Lael Chimtembo confirmed that police are investigating the alleged murder but declined to provide detailed information, saying doing so could jeopardize ongoing investigations.

“At this stage of the investigation, we are not able to provide further details in order to avoid compromising the investigation,” Chimtembo said.

Police have confirmed that one suspect is currently in custody and is expected to appear before court. Authorities have not yet disclosed the suspect’s identity or the specific charges that will be brought against them.
