Mudi Murder Investigation Deepens as Police Keep Silent Amid Growing Public Pressure
The Malawi Police Service has maintained its silence over key developments in the ongoing investigation into the alleged murder of Asif Khan, a case that has gripped the nation and sparked widespread public debate.
Khan is alleged to have died after enduring nearly two weeks of torture over accusations that he had stolen gold. The incident reportedly occurred in Mudi Township, Blantyre, on 6 July 2026, prompting calls for a swift and transparent investigation.

Despite increasing public interest, police have declined to comment on reports circulating on social media claiming that some individuals linked to the case may have left Malawi through Bakili Muluzi International Airport on 14 and 16 July 2026.
Speaking to the media, National Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Lael Chimtembo said investigators are not yet ready to discuss the reports publicly.
“The Malawi Police Service is not in a position, at the moment, to comment on such reports. However, be assured that we are actively pursuing every lead to solve this case,” Chimtembo said.
His remarks have done little to calm growing public concern, with many Malawians demanding greater transparency regarding the progress of the investigation.
One Suspect Remains in Custody
Meanwhile, one of the suspects, Noor Ansari, has already appeared before the Limbe First Grade Magistrate’s Court, where he was remanded to Chichiri Prison.

Members of the public have also questioned who owned the gold, whether more individuals participated in the alleged torture, and if all those responsible will eventually face justice.
Legal analysts say the investigation is likely to remain under close public scrutiny until police provide a comprehensive account of the evidence gathered and the steps being taken to prosecute those allegedly involved.
Public Awaits Next Move
As investigators continue their work behind the scenes, attention is now focused on whether police will make further arrests or provide additional information that could clarify one of Malawi’s most closely watched criminal investigations this year.
