BLANTYRE — A fresh engineering assessment has concluded that Kamuzu Stadium is beyond repair, reinforcing the Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) long-held position that the country’s iconic football venue is no longer fit to host competitive matches.
The assessment, conducted to determine the structural viability of the stadium, recommends that the facility be demolished rather than renovated. According to the engineer, a cost-benefit analysis found that demolishing and rebuilding the stadium would be a more practical and economical option than attempting to restore the aging structure.Kamuzu Stadium Gate Cashiers to appears in Court
The findings are expected to influence the ongoing debate among government authorities, football stakeholders, and sports administrators over the future of the stadium, with opinions previously divided between renovation and complete reconstruction.
Kamuzu Stadium has faced structural concerns for more than a decade. In 2012, the facility was declared unsafe after engineers discovered significant cracks in several of its stands, raising fears over spectator safety.
Earlier this year, in March, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Club Licensing First Instance Body again declared the stadium unfit to host football matches, citing its failure to meet the required infrastructure and safety standards for competitive fixtures.
The latest engineering report appears to validate FAM’s position that the stadium can no longer safely accommodate football matches without major intervention.FAM–SULOM Standoff Over Kamuzu Stadium Sparks Fury Ahead of FDH Premiership Kickoff
If authorities adopt the recommendation, demolition would pave the way for the construction of a modern stadium capable of meeting both national and international football standards.
The government and relevant stakeholders are yet to announce a final decision on the future of Kamuzu Stadium, but the engineering assessment is likely to play a key role in determining the next course of action. The Shadows of Kamuzu: A Call to Abolish Kamuzu Day in Malawi
