Malawi’s electricity supply is set for a significant technological upgrade as the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) prepares to commission a 20-megawatt/40-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Friday, a project expected to improve the reliability and efficiency of the national power grid.

The battery storage facility, valued at approximately K33 billion, has been financed by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) as part of efforts to modernise Malawi’s electricity infrastructure and support the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
ESCOM says the Battery Energy Storage System has been designed to strengthen grid stability by storing electricity when demand is low and releasing it almost instantly during periods of high demand. ESCOM Chief Executive Officer William Kaipa said the system will act as a strategic reserve, enabling the utility to respond quickly to fluctuations in electricity demand and supply.
“The system will store power and deploy it instantly during peak hours,” Kaipa said, adding that the investment will enhance the reliability of electricity supply across the country.
Energy experts say battery storage technology plays a crucial role in modern power systems by balancing electricity supply and demand, reducing outages, and supporting renewable energy generation such as solar power, whose output varies depending on weather conditions.
