Leonard Mwalwanda has been elected as the new Deputy Regional Chairperson for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the North-North Region following elections held in Karonga. Mwalwanda secured a decisive victory with 102 votes, defeating his opponents Abraham Mwakhwawa, who received 37 votes, and James Mwaisemba, who garnered 24 votes. Out of the 166 votes cast, three were declared null and void.

In his acceptance speech, Mwalwanda expressed his commitment to working closely with the regional committee to strengthen the MCP in the North-North region. He emphasized unity and collaboration as key factors in driving the party’s agenda forward in the area. “I am honored by the trust you have placed in me, and I will work tirelessly to ensure the party remains strong and vibrant in this region,” he said.

Uchizi Mkandawire, the MCP’s Second Deputy Secretary General and former Deputy Regional Chairperson for the North-North region, extended his best wishes to Mwalwanda. Mkandawire, who had previously held the position, expressed confidence in Mwalwanda’s leadership and wished him success in his new role.

The elections come as the MCP continues to solidify its presence across Malawi, with the North-North region being a key area of focus for the party’s organizational efforts ahead of the 2025 general elections.
