The fight against mob justice in Malawi has intensified following a high-level awareness campaign launched in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts, where government officials, police leadership, and human rights organisations have united to condemn the growing wave of mob killings.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, together with Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for Operations, Dr. Noel Kayira, led the awareness drive aimed at educating communities on the dangers and legal consequences of taking the law into their own hands.

The campaign reached several trading centres and communities through whistle-stop engagements before culminating in a major public function held at Ngabu on Tuesday, 13 May 2026.

Speaking during the campaign, the leaders stressed that mob justice is a serious violation of human rights and undermines the country’s justice system. They warned that communities cannot continue resorting to violence, torture, and killings whenever crime suspects are apprehended.

Authorities observed that mob killings have continued to destroy lives, spread fear among citizens, and weaken trust in lawful justice processes. They urged Malawians to report suspected criminals to police instead of attacking them.

The campaign also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between citizens, traditional leaders, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organisations in promoting peace, justice, and respect for human dignity.

The Malawi Police Service received support for the initiative from DANIDA through the Fighting Inequality Programme. Human rights organisations, including NCA-DCA and the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC), partnered with police to intensify awareness activities across the two districts.

Stakeholders described the intervention as timely, especially at a moment when mob violence continues to claim innocent lives and threaten social stability in some parts of the country.

The government has since reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every Malawian is protected under the law and that justice must only be delivered through legal institutions — not through violent acts by angry crowds.
