LILONGWE — The Amaryllis Hotel deal appears to be heading into the territory that has become all too familiar in Malawi: a controversial matter attracts public outrage, investigations are talked about, and then—silence.

The questions surrounding the deal have not disappeared.

Neither has the public interest.

Yet there appears to be little to show for the passage of time.

No arrests. No publicly released findings. No clear explanation of where the matter stands.

And that is raising fresh questions about whether the case is being allowed to quietly die.

If investigators have established that no criminal offence was committed, they should say so.

If investigations are still underway, the public should be told what is causing the delay.

And if evidence points to wrongdoing, then those responsible should face the law.

Instead, the matter appears to have entered a frustrating information vacuum.

WHERE IS THE ACTION?

The central question is straightforward:

What has happened to the investigation?

Have key individuals been questioned?

Have documents and financial records been examined?

Have investigators completed their work?

Have suspects been identified?

If so, why have there been no arrests or charges?

SILENCE ONLY DEEPENS SUSPICION

The longer authorities remain silent, the more difficult it becomes for the public to understand what is actually happening.

Silence does not establish guilt.

But neither does silence inspire confidence.

When authorities announce investigations into matters that attract intense public attention, people reasonably expect those investigations to eventually produce answers.

Justice cannot be measured by headlines and press statements. It must be demonstrated through action, evidence and accountability.

WHO IS BEING HELD TO ACCOUNT?

The most uncomfortable question is whether the Amaryllis Hotel matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.

Malawi cannot afford a system where cases involving politically connected, powerful or influential individuals are allowed to disappear from public view.

The principle should be simple:

If there is evidence of an offence, prosecute. If there is no evidence, explain. If investigations are continuing, update the public.

What cannot continue is an endless wait without meaningful answers.

MALAWIANS DESERVE ANSWERS

It is demanding transparency.

It is demanding to know whether the investigation is alive or dead.

It is demanding to know whether anyone has been held accountable.

And, most importantly, it is demanding assurance that public-interest cases are not quietly buried when political or institutional pressure becomes uncomfortable.

The Amaryllis Hotel deal should therefore not be allowed to become another unresolved chapter in Malawi’s long-running accountability debate.

If there is nothing to hide, authorities should have nothing to fear from answering questions.

And if there is evidence of wrongdoing, then the time for explanations is over.
