Kanengo Police have secured convictions against all 17 suspects arrested in connection with the theft and possession of electrical wires from homes in Area 25, Lilongwe.
The suspects were arrested on August 6, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation launched after residents reported a series of thefts involving electrical connections from D-Iron to electricity meters.
The 17 appeared before Mkukula First Grade Magistrate Court on August 7, where they all pleaded guilty to the offences and were subsequently convicted and fined a combined K1.5 million.
Jussab Mataya received the highest fine of K500,000, while Benson Linje was fined K200,000. The remaining 15 suspects were each fined between K50,000 and K80,000, depending on the severity of their offences.Kanengo Police Confiscates Fake Fertilizer
Police also confirmed that all recovered items, including the stolen electrical wires and a solar street light, have been forfeited to the Malawi Government.
The case was successfully prosecuted by Inspector Elizabeth Maluwa and the Kanengo Prosecution Team.
Kanengo Police have meanwhile warned hardware and scrap-metal dealers against dealing in stolen property, stressing that buying or selling stolen goods can result in serious legal consequences.Zamba spends a night at Kanengo Police
Kanengo Police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Macfarlen Mseteka said the station remains committed to maintaining security in Area 25 and urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities to the police.
