Controversy Surrounds Sale of Amaryllis Hotel

The sale of the Amaryllis Hotel has sparked fresh controversy after it emerged that several individuals were invited to a meeting where the decision to purchase the property was reportedly discussed.

Reports indicate that people including Gabriel Chembezi, Adriana Mwale, Natasha Nkhoma, Boyd Hamera, George Liwimbi, Charity Gambatula, Idrissa Mwale, Simplex Bwanali, Yona Phiri and Blazio Mphepo were among those invited to a gathering held on 17 November, during the period when discussions about the acquisition of the hotel were taking place.

A member of the Public Accounts Committee, representing Lilongwe Chilobwe Constituency, Lawrence Chazi, has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the meeting. He questioned the role of the invited individuals and whether proper procedures were followed in the decision-making process leading to the purchase.

Chazi said the committee is seeking clarification on why certain individuals were involved at a critical stage of the transaction and whether their participation had any influence on the final decision.

The issue has drawn public attention, with some stakeholders calling for greater transparency regarding the acquisition of the hotel. Critics argue that the government and relevant authorities should provide full details of the process to ensure accountability.

Authorities are yet to give a comprehensive explanation regarding the meeting and the role played by those who attended. Meanwhile, calls continue for a thorough review of the deal to determine whether all legal and procurement procedures were followed.
