The President expressed his grief in a condolence message issued through State House following the death of Banda, one of Malawi’s most recognisable broadcasting personalities.

“The First Lady and I are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Mr. Brian Banda,” Mutharika said.

He described the late MBC Director General as “a patriot, a distinguished media icon” whose voice, vision and contribution to public service had touched the lives of Malawians for decades.

Banda built a strong reputation during his years in broadcasting, particularly through his work with the Times Group, where he became known for engaging politicians, public officials and other prominent personalities on issues affecting Malawians.

His interviewing style and ability to engage guests on national issues made him a familiar voice to audiences across the country.

In March 2026, Banda took on a new chapter in his career when he was appointed Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.

His appointment took effect on 16 March 2026, placing him at the helm of Malawi’s national public broadcaster.

The MBC Board said his responsibilities included providing leadership in the management and strategic direction of the corporation.
